About Katrina West
When I was young I spent a lot of time exploring the woods and countryside near my home in rural Indiana. This innate love of nature was fostered by my father and grandmother and they encouraged me as I began to draw the subjects I found there. This eventually led to plein air painting in a variety of media as I sought out the pastoral in my efforts to connect with the land.
Portraiture is also a subject I hold dear and I never fail to find inspiration in the human face. I love to watch people and the effects of light and life I see on their faces. Capturing the unique story there is a challenge with every face.
I have found after many years of painting that the true joy is capturing a moment in time as it is revealed by light and seen by the human eye. No matter the subject there is no truer beauty on this earth.
I graduated from Herron School of Art in Indianapolis, In with a B.F.A. I consider traveling abroad, including Kenya, France, and Panama, and around the U.S., including New Mexico, Florida, and Maine, as an important part of my education as well. I currently maintain a studio in Indianapolis, IN but wherever I find myself whether it is drawing a portrait of a Maasi chief or painting the mountains in the sun and wind I will continue to chase the light.
I am currently being represented by Xanadu Gallery in Scottsdale, AZ http://www.xanadugallery.com/Art/ArtistGallery.asp?ArtistID=2658 on line.
